The Minnesota Twins traded outfielder Carlos Gomez to the Milwaukee Brewers for shortstop J.J. Hardy Friday. Hardy, 27, batted .229 with 16 doubles and 11 home runs in 2009. He had 47 RBIs in 117 games. He was selected to the National League All-Star team in 2007. He has a career batting average of .262, with 75 home runs and 265 RBIs in 571 games.
The Twins acquired Gomez, 23, in February 2008 from the New York Mets as part of the Johan Santana trade. In 2009, he batted .229, with 15 doubles, 3 home runs and 28 RBIs.
The move makes a bit more room in the Twins' crowded outfield. The team still has Delmon Young, Denard Span, Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel. Kubel is often the team's designated hitter, but also spends time in the outfield.
It's a new chance for Hardy, who was once considered a rising star for the Brewers. General Manager Doug Melvin said it was hard to part ways with Hardy.
"J.J. has been a steady performer for the Brewers," Melvin said in a statement. "His professionalism and popularity with our fans and his teammates made this difficult, but he has been given the opportunity to go to a great organization to play and perform at the high level he is capable of playing.
