Pack up the family and head down to the State Capitol on Saturday, October 4 and join in the fun of marathon weekend! Known as “A Day of Fun for the Whole Family”, the Medtronic TC Family Events & TC 5K is a great way to get the whole family involved.
There’s the TC 5K Run/Walk, presented by RBC Wealth Management, which starts and ends on John Ireland Blvd. This out and back race gets started at 8:30 a.m. New this year, is a special 8:40 a.m. start time for walkers. The second annual Governor’s Cup is part of this event. The Governor’s Cup recognizes the hard work emergency responders dedicate to marathon weekend, as well as to the people of Minnesota. Teams from within the emergency response community run together to compete for fastest total team time and take home the Cup for the year.
And if a 5K is a bit too long, there’s the Diana Pierce Family Mile presented by Medica. It’s a shorter race, but just as much fun for participants young and old. The Half Mile presented by ING, offers younger running enthusiasts a chance to take part, too.
And there are fun races for the littlest members of the family. The Toddler Trot, presented by Flint Hills Resources, is approximately 50 yards and takes place on the lawn of the State Capitol Grounds. And the Diaper Dash, presented by Pioneer Press, is an opportunity for those who require their hands and knees to move across the lawn.
And don’t forget the kids’ favorite mascots, Harry & Shelly. Every year, our tortoise and hare invite mascots from around the state to come out and join them in a friendly dash of fur and feather for a great trophy and some fun bragging rights. The Harry & Shelly’s Mascot Invitational takes place immediately following the Diaper Dash and all the mascots will stick around for photos and high-fives from the kids after they run.
Registration for all of the family activities is open online at www.mtcmarathon.org or through mail-in entry forms, located at area running stores and health clubs. Day of registration is also available up to 15 minutes before the start of each race.
After your race, head over to the RiverCentre at 175 West Kellogg Boulevard in St. Paul for the C9 for Target Health & Fitness Expo which continues until 7:00 p.m. Pick up your favorite running goods, marathon merchandise and information from more than 70 vendors or stay for a seminar, for the latest running tips and a virtual course tour. And stay for the Buca di Beppo Pasta Party which takes place in the RiverCentre from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (tickets can be purchased in advance, or at the door at the RiverCentre in St. Paul.)
And of course, come out and join the 300,000 spectators along the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon route on Sunday, October 5. The race gets underway at 8:00 a.m. and the 26.2 mile course begins near the HHH Metrodome in Minneapolis and finishes at the State Capitol on John Ireland Boulevard in St. Paul. The course is flat to rolling, mostly asphalt, lakes, rivers and tree-lined boulevards. More than 300,000 spectators and 5,000 race weekend volunteers make the marathon a treat to experience!
After the race, the 27th Mile has refreshments and fun. There’s the Post Race Party Tent, the Merchandise store, the family meeting area, music, massage, medal engraving and more. The 27th Mile is located beyond the secured finish area, along Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the State Capitol Grounds in St. Paul and is free and open to the public.
